Automatic Door Safety: What Building Owners Are Actually Responsible For
An automatic door is a powered machine that members of the public interact with unsupervised, hundreds of times a day. The responsibility for it being safe sits with the person who operates the building.
This surprises people. There is a common assumption that once a door has been installed and signed off, safety is the installer's concern or the manufacturer's. In practice, the ongoing duty to make sure the equipment in your building is safe to use rests with the owner or operator.
That does not mean the situation is complicated. It means it is worth understanding clearly.
Why automatic doors are treated as machinery
A powered door moves under its own force, on a cycle, in a space occupied by people who are not paying attention to it. Most users approach an entrance while looking at a phone, carrying something, talking to someone, or shepherding a child.
That combination is why powered doors have their own safety considerations, and why those considerations focus so heavily on detection: the system needs to know a person is there, and stop or reverse before contact.
The groups most at risk are predictable. Children, elderly users, people with reduced mobility, and anyone with a visual impairment are all more likely to be affected by a door that closes too quickly or fails to detect them reliably.
The recognised safety standard
There is an established safety standard for powered pedestrian doors in the UK and Europe. It is not legislation in itself, but it is the accepted benchmark for what a safe installation looks like, covering detection, forces, speeds, and the safeguards required around the moving parts.
Its practical significance is this: if an incident occurred and the question of whether the door was safe was ever examined, the standard is the yardstick against which that would be judged. Demonstrating that an entrance is serviced and maintained against it is a considerably stronger position than having nothing to point to.
What a safety inspection covers
DETECTION
Whether the sensors reliably detect people approaching and present in the door's path, including users who are shorter, slower, or less mobile than an average adult, and whether detection zones still cover the areas they were configured to cover.
FORCE AND SPEED
Whether the door's operating forces and closing speeds remain within safe limits. These can drift over time as components wear or as settings are adjusted to compensate for other issues.
SAFEGUARDING
Whether the physical arrangement still protects users from the hazards inherent in a moving door: trapping points, shear points, and impact.
FAIL-SAFE BEHAVIOUR
What the door does when something goes wrong, loses power, or encounters an obstruction. Behaviour under failure conditions matters as much as behaviour under normal ones.
Why documentation matters as much as the work
The value of a service record is not administrative. It is evidence.
If a claim were ever made, the questions would be straightforward: when was the door last inspected, what was found, what was done about it, and by whom. A maintained record answers all four. Its absence answers none of them, and the absence tends to be interpreted unfavourably.
There is also a practical benefit that has nothing to do with liability. A documented history means the next engineer to attend knows what has already been adjusted, replaced, or flagged, which makes diagnosis faster and repairs more effective.
How often should doors be inspected?
The right frequency depends on how hard the door works. An entrance in a busy public building cycles far more in a month than a secondary door in a small office does in a year, and wear accumulates with use rather than with time.
For most commercial entrances, a regular scheduled inspection is the sensible baseline, with higher frequency for high traffic doors, doors in harsh environments, and older installations. A specialist can advise on an appropriate interval for a specific building rather than applying a blanket rule.

Our door has never had a problem. Do we still need it inspected?
Yes. Many of the things an inspection checks, such as detection coverage and closing forces, drift gradually and are not obvious in normal use. The absence of an incident is not evidence that the settings remain within safe limits.
What records should we keep?
Dates of inspections, what was checked, what was found, what remedial work was carried out, and who carried it out. A competent contractor will provide this as part of the service.
Does this apply to internal automatic doors too?
